I had coffee with Don Miguel...the old gardener and asked him what he thought about Aaron Pena possibly defecting to the Grand Old Party. What would it mean to the Valley if Pena became a Republican?
The old man put his gloves on top of his Ford pick-up truck and sipped on his coffee. Starbucks I had bought him. He gave me that old wise grin.
This is what Don Miguel said: If Pena becomes a Republican then he is a chaquetero. A man who changes coats to suit his ambitions. In the old days it involved corruption and its mistress...dinero. YOU watch..he will use a cliche like I did not leave my party...my party left me. Either way it makes him a Judas. I do not trust any politician who switches sides like he switches socks. Republican or Democrat. I have seen my share of chaqueteros. Zebras who want to change their stripes. A politician can be worse than a prostitute. Even if he does not jump ship he is suspect. It is great political theater. The Republicans will hail him as heroic. The funny thing is that when one of theirs dons the Democratic chaqueta he is viewed as the Messiah's betrayer.
I asked Don Miguel if he wanted any pan dulce with his Starbucks and he gave me a thumbs up and then laughingly asked for an Aaron Pena...
What?
A turnover...preferably an apple turnover!
We will see if Aaron Pena goes GOP.
